About the Fellowship

The Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery is a structured, hands-on training program that provides comprehensive exposure to all aspects of bariatric & Metabolic surgery, including clinical evaluation, operative techniques, postoperative care, complication management, and research methodology. The program aims to develop competent, confident, and evidence-based bariatric surgeons under the mentorship of Dr. Manish Khaitan at NObesity. 

OSSI Affiliation & Institutional Recognition

As per the fellowship agreement, NObesity Healthcare LLP at KD Hospital has established a formal affiliation with the OSSI for fellowship training in Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (FMBS). The hospital is committed to maintaining fellowship medical education programs approved by OSSI.

Eligibility Post MS/DNB (General Surgery) or MCh/DNB (GI Surgery) with experience in laparoscopic surgery.
Training Format Structured hands-on clinical and surgical training with academic sessions, research, and multidisciplinary exposure.
Certification FMBS Certification
GMC Approval Gujarat Medical Council approval is mandatory for hands-on training

The fellowship provides immersive clinical exposure under the direct supervision of experienced bariatric surgeons, enabling fellows to develop confidence in managing patients throughout their surgical journey.

Fellows Will Gain Experience In

  • Participating in 50 or more bariatric surgical procedures
  • Intestinal bypass procedures, including Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and OAGB
  • Restrictive procedures such as Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Revisional and complex bariatric surgeries
  • Comprehensive preoperative patient assessment
  • Inpatient clinical management
  • Long-term postoperative follow-up and outcomes assessment
  • Bariatric emergencies and complication management
  • Endoscopic evaluation and management

This practical experience ensures fellows gain both technical proficiency and sound clinical judgment in modern bariatric and metabolic surgery.

Research is an integral part of the fellowship experience. Under the guidance of the Program Director, fellows complete a thesis project or study while strengthening their skills in scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice.

Participants are encouraged to present or publish their research at the Obesity Surgery Society of India Conference (OSSICON) or in recognized peer-reviewed journals. The program also includes participation in patient support group meetings and national or international scientific conferences, fostering continuous academic and professional development.

Progress is assessed through a structured evaluation process to ensure academic excellence and clinical competency.

Assessment includes:

  • Mid-Term Evaluation (6 Months): Academic performance, clinical knowledge, and operative skills
  • Final Examination: Theory viva, case presentation, research review, and logbook assessment

Upon successful completion of all academic, clinical, and research requirements, fellows are awarded the Certificate of Completion in Minimally Invasive Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery by OSSI.

Applicants should have:

  • MS/DNB in General Surgery, or
  • MCh/DNB in GI Surgery
  • Adequate laparoscopic surgical experience

Candidates are responsible for obtaining the required GMC approvals. NOBesity provides institutional guidance and documentation support throughout the application process.

  • A minimum of 80% attendance is mandatory throughout the fellowship.
